How much does kids soccer training cost in Melbourne?

By the MatchCraft Football Academy team ·

The short answer

Junior soccer pricing in Melbourne varies widely with session length, group size, what's included and extras like registration fees and kit — so compare cost per coached hour, not the headline price. MatchCraft's planned pricing is a flat $175 for a 4-session block (one night a week) or $300 for an 8-session block (two nights a week), with two-hour sessions.

Pricing in junior football is strangely hard to pin down. Fees are split across registrations, terms, kit and levies; “per session” numbers hide short sessions; and what’s actually included varies enormously from program to program. Rather than quote other programs’ prices — which change constantly and depend on the club or academy — this guide walks through the factors that drive the real cost, the questions that expose it, and exactly how MatchCraft’s planned pricing works, so you can compare properly.

What actually drives the cost?

Junior soccer in Melbourne broadly comes in three shapes, and each one’s price is driven by different things:

Community club season. The traditional path: a registration fee plus a season fee, for a season that runs roughly April to September. The questions that matter: how many training sessions the fee actually covers, how long each session runs, and what happens through winter (a problem we’ve written about separately).

Private academy or development program. Structured technical coaching on top of, or instead of, club football. Here the cost drivers are session length, coach-to-player ratio and facility quality — and quality varies widely, which is why the safety and quality checklist matters more here than anywhere.

Holiday clinics and casual programs. Per-day or per-week pricing, useful for school holidays, but no continuity — and continuity is what actually develops a player.

What are the hidden costs to ask about?

The advertised number is not always the whole number. Before committing anywhere, ask:

  • Is there a registration or sign-up fee on top of the program fee?
  • Is kit compulsory, and what does the package cost?
  • What happens when a session can’t run? Credit, make-up session, or nothing? Get the answer in writing.
  • How long is a “session”? A session that runs 45 minutes is a very different product to a session that runs two hours at the same price.
  • What’s the coach-to-player ratio? A cheap session with 30 kids per coach is expensive per touch of the ball.

That last idea — cost per coached hour, adjusted for group size — is the honest way to compare programs that package themselves differently.

How will MatchCraft’s planned pricing work?

MatchCraft’s planned model charges per block of sessions, not per month or term:

Plan Planned price Works out to
1 night per week — 4-session block $175 $43.75 per two-hour session
2 nights per week — 8-session block $300 $37.50 per two-hour session

Why blocks? Because calendars are uneven. A “monthly” fee buys four sessions in some months and five in others; a block is exact: pay for 4 or 8 sessions, receive 4 or 8 sessions.

What the planned price buys:

  • Two full hours per session, Monday to Thursday, 6:00–8:00 pm
  • A planned three-block structure: 6:00–6:40 activation and age-appropriate S&C, 6:40–7:20 technical coaching in small ability groups, 7:20–8:00 coached match play
  • A planned cap of 20 players per session
  • A policy that coaches must hold a current Working with Children Check before working with participants

Two honest pre-launch notes: each group needs a minimum of 10 committed players to run, and venues in Melbourne’s north and west are still being finalised. Full planned session structure is on the programs page.

Is two hours a week worth the money?

Value in youth sport is repetition, not minutes on an invoice. Two hours of structured indoor training delivers more touches, more coached corrections and more game moments than most shorter formats — and because the program is planned as fully indoor, sessions won’t depend on Melbourne’s winter. (If you’re weighing session lengths, see how long a kids session should be.)

Per coached hour, the planned 8-session block comes to $18.75 — for capped-group, structured coaching. That’s the comparison we’re happy to be judged on once sessions begin.

Register interest — it costs nothing

MatchCraft Football Academy is taking interest registrations for its planned October 2026 launch across Melbourne’s north and west. Register interest — no payment details, no obligation — and you’ll be among the first to know when venues and nights are confirmed. Your first confirmed session will be free.

Quick questions, straight answers

Why does MatchCraft plan to charge per block instead of per month or term?

Because months and terms are uneven — a monthly fee buys four sessions in some months and five in others, and a term fee can hide how many sessions you actually receive. A block is exact: you pay for 4 or 8 sessions and you receive 4 or 8 sessions.

How much is that per session and per hour?

Under the planned pricing, a 4-session block at $175 works out to $43.75 per two-hour session — about $21.90 per coached hour. The 8-session block at $300 comes to $37.50 per session, or $18.75 per hour. Whatever program you compare, divide the price by the hours of actual coaching to get a fair number.

Does registering interest with MatchCraft cost anything?

No — registering interest requires no payment and no card details. If sessions are confirmed near you, your first confirmed session will be free, so you can watch a full two hours before paying anything.

When will MatchCraft sessions start?

The program is planned to launch in October 2026 in Melbourne's north and west, with venues being finalised. Sessions are planned Monday to Thursday, 6:00–8:00 pm, and each group needs a minimum of 10 committed players to run.
